Paslin fosters talent through new program

As our department prepares for a massive Manufacturing Day event Friday, Oct. 2, we take a closer look at one manufacturer who is leading the way to cultivate their own highly-skilled workforce.

Headquartered in Warren, Paslin is a full-service design and build organization that primarily serves the automotive manufacturing industry. They are an automated manufacturing and assembly solutions provider, specializing in engineering, assembly systems, tool building, body frames and robotic welding.

A skilled workforce is always in high demand, and Paslin is taking steps to ensure they’ve got one. This Macomb County manufacturer is planning for the future with the launch of a new apprenticeship program designed to train the next generation of manufacturing professionals.

“We want to develop new, upcoming talent,” COO Kerry Hammer told Manufacturing Today in its September/October 2015 issue. “The demand is so strong.”

This program is important because it exposes career opportunities to students who want to learn a skilled trade – something not always taught or emphasized in schools. Paslin has been working with area high schools to recruit students for the program; 17 are currently enrolled.

Apprenticeship is a combination of on-the-job training and related academic instruction in which workers learn the skills needed to qualify for manufacturing jobs. During this program, the apprentices receive practical hands-on training while also obtaining their associate’s degree, due to tuition reimbursement. After successful completion, these apprentices can pursue further education and training, as well as continue building on the skills they have learned with Paslin.

In other news, Paslin has recently expanded by building a 166,000-square-foot Cherry Creek Plant in Shelby Township that includes 33,000 square feet of engineering space. The grand opening was May 8. The company has three locations in Warren which will continue production and be used for training purposes. The new location will serve as an engineering center and handle the company’s new business. Approximately 200 jobs will be created.
