You might be surprised to learn that Michigan is the nation’s fourth largest producer of grapes. With more than 13,500 acres devoted to the fruit, Michigan is also the nation’s fifth largest producer of wine grapes in the nation.
Today, there are more than 130 wineries throughout the state leading to an increase in wine production of more than 34 percent over the past five years.
Macomb County is the home to nine local wineries and it continues to grow. These wineries have so much to offer from sweet and dry wines, to fruity creations. Every place has something unique to set them apart. With these wineries in our backyard you no longer have to go to Traverse City.
The Thumbs Up Wine Trail promotes tourism and the southeastern Michigan wine industry. The tour includes 12 wineries in the thumb region, seven right here in the Macomb County. This trail is another great way to spend your weekend, enjoy some laughs and great wines.
