Macomb County is home to a robust transportation and warehousing sector that supports the county’s bedrock industry of manufacturing. With a large network of manufacturers producing more than $34 billion of goods each year, and requiring an input of $13 billion, the county’s economy relies on industries providing transportation of cargo, warehousing and storage for goods, and support activities related to modes of transportation. 

The Detroit/Toledo/Windsor trade corridor has the capacity, skills and world-class infrastructure to move products effectively and efficiently throughout the region and globally. In 2014, the region was the fifth largest export market in the United States. Utilizing air, rail, water and road, merchandise shipments totaled $50.3 billion.

In Macomb County, the transportation logistics and warehousing industry is comprised of more than 500 businesses. Combined, they employ more than 8,500 workers.

STAFFING PATTERNS

Transportation logistics and warehousing is one of the most in-demand industries in Macomb County. Data provided by the county’s economic data partners at Economic Modeling Specialists Incorporated (EMSI) show that the most openings right now are for truck drivers and individuals with commercial driver’s licenses. Seven out of the top 20 job openings in the county right now are within the transportation logistics and warehousing industry.

As the manufacturing sector continues to show healthy and consistent growth, there will continue to be an increased demand for the ability to handle the supply chain within the industry.

Kroger, Chesterfield Township

Kroger was searching for a distribution site in Michigan. While working with the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, they discovered a former industrial building site with a large parking lot close to the expressway that was available in Chesterfield Township. Macomb County’s business development team was asked to assist with local matters relating to use, permits and zoning matters. The company distribution site is now flourishing with 350 full-time employees and 100 trucks in and out of the facility daily to destinations all over Michigan.

Lipari Food, Inc., Warren

Lipari is a distribution company with 970 total employees, 550 of which are in Michigan. They distribute 15,000 products utilizing 150 salespeople. They have added 2,000 products this year after buying a small distributor in Akron, Ohio. An auto salvage yard dating back more than 70 years is being redeveloped into a state-of-the-art, 252,000-square-foot freezer, warehouse and truck terminal building for Lipari Foods, Inc. The facility will also house food processing and manufacturing. The project costs approximately $36 million and will create 337 new jobs. The incentives created for this project were $950,000 Brownfield Tax Increment Financing, Michigan Works! training and services around $257,188, PA 198 Property Tax Abatement real and personal property for 12 years saving almost $6 million, and a loan and grant of $1 million each through the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality.

Star Truck Rentals, Inc., Warren

Star Truck Rentals has provided logistics support services in Michigan for more than 150 years. They currently have 17 locations in Michigan and one in Indiana. They have approximately 7.71 acres at their Warren location, which has been renovated as a logistics center. It offers fueling services, fleet maintenance and long- and short-term truck leasing. The investment is estimated at $2 million, retaining 12 employees and hiring eight additional workers. The company received a brownfield worth $416,000  from the city of Warren in 2016. Macomb County’s business development team worked with the Macomb County Department of Roads to enhance existing infrastructure so truck traffic could more easily enter and exit the location.
