More than 100 years after the auto assembly line was first introduced, Macomb County remains at the forefront of the U.S. auto industry. The transformational growth of this industry is opening up economic opportunities across Macomb County. Ten automotive OEM facilities occupy 25 million square feet and employ more than 35,000 workers here. Since 2010, automotive companies have invested more than $7.4 billion in Macomb County including substantial investments by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Ford Motor Company and General Motors. 

Macomb County’s automotive supply chain network is comprised of more than 400 companies that specialize in all stages of product life cycle with significant expertise in research and development, tool and die, and automated systems.
 
Success in business is dependent on access to a wide and deep pool of talent and experience. Aside from more than 75,000 in the skilled trades, our region employs more than 87,000 engineers and 70,000 R&D professionals. Each year, more than 12,000 engineers graduate from Michigan universities and colleges with degrees in a wide range of disciplines. 

Macomb County is better equipped than any other county in the nation to implement next generation mobility through connected and autonomous vehicle capabilities. The infrastructure and workforce needed to support the emerging demands of this industry exist here. National labs and research facilities creating this synergy include the Ford Romeo Proving Grounds, General Motors Global Technical Center, National Automotive Center (NAC) and U.S. Army Tank Automotive Research Development and Engineering Center (TARDEC).

General Motors, Warren

General Motors (GM) is a global automotive company that was founded in 1908 and is the world’s largest U.S.-based automaker. Macomb is home to the GM Global Technical Center facility and Warren Transmission. The "Tech Center" is a 710-acre campus located in Warren that currently houses 19,000 employees. Recent investments include over $1 billion in new facilities and renovations as well as the creation of 2,600 new jobs.  This project  includes plans for a new design studio, the renovation of the R&D facilities, a new IT building, additional testing facilities at the Advanced Energy Center, and the renovation of existing offices as well as the construction of additional parking.  All this is in addition to the $139.5 million investment GM previously announced for the body shop and stamping facility at Warren Pre-Production Operations.

Ford Motor Company, Romeo

Founded in 1903, Ford Motor Company is a global automobile company and is the second largest U.S.-based automaker of passenger and commercial vehicles. Ford Macomb County facilities include Romeo Proving Grounds, Romeo Engine Plant, Van Dyke Transmission and Sterling Axle.  Plans were recently announced to invest approximately $1 billion in two of its Sterling Heights facilities over the next four years as part of a larger agreement with the United Auto Workers union that calls for approximately $9 billion in investments at the company’s manufacturing facilities across the country. Ford’s investment in Sterling Heights will include $400 million in the Sterling Heights Axle Plant, in addition to $650 million at the Van Dyke Transmission Facility to add three new transmissions.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Sterling Heights

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), the seventh largest automaker in the world, designs, engineers, manufactures and sells passenger cars, light commercial vehicles and components. Company facilities include Warren Truck, Sterling Stamping and Warren Stamping. Warren Stamping Sterling Heights Assembly Plant (SHAP)  was originally built in 1953 as a jet engine plant and was operated by the Army as the Michigan Ordinance Missile Plant with Chrysler serving as contractor, building Redstone and Jupiter missiles. It was converted into an automobile plant in 1980 by Volkswagen and purchased by Chrysler Corporation in 1983. Recent investment includes nearly $850 million in a state-of-the-art, 425,000-square-foot paint shop. In October 2011, the company announced that it would invest $165 million to add a 1-million-square-foot body shop. Today, SHAP is recognized as the largest stamping plant in the world.
