More than 75,0 00 acres – nearly a quarter of all land – in Macomb County is a hotbed for agriculture purposes. With more than 500 active farms, the county is fully involved in all aspects of the farm-to-table process. Food products grown and manufactured in Macomb County are routinely sold to both wholesalers and retailers for distribution and have value added through businesses primarily engaged in baking, processing and packaging. Michigan’s climate and geography make it home to the second most diverse state in the United States for crop production. Macomb ranks in the top five percent of all counties nationwide in dollar amount of products sold for nursery, greenhouse, floriculture and sod products.

Macomb County is home to 18 dairy farms, 36 livestock operations, 2.2 million square feet of greenhouse and nursery operations, 10 community-sponsored farmers markets.





Since 2009, food manufacturing jobs within Macomb County have nearly doubled from 762 to 1,409. Agricultural production jobs have risen from 850 to 1,058. Macomb County is currently home to eight craft breweries. In Michigan, the craft brewing industry has doubled the number of operations since 2011. With this rapid growth, three in-state universities are embracing the growing number of craft breweries by launching college programs centered on fermentation science and sustainable brewing.

Kuhnhenn Brewery Co., Warren

Kuhnhenn is an award-winning beer company in Warren that purchased and renovated a previously closed business on Groesbeck in Clinton Township to open a second location. The new facility is 35,000 square feet, and they expanded another 5,000 square feet to enclose beer tanks in their own space. They are making beer, distilled products and wine at the facility along with serving German-style food. They will also manufacture craft beer for worldwide distribution out of this location. This was a $2.4 million renovation and expansion project that received a 12-year tax abatement from Clinton Township. They hired more than 30 new employees and continue to grow. 


Carmela Foods Distributing, Inc., Fraser

Carmela Foods Distributing is an importer and distributor of specialty foods, wine and center-of-the-plate proteins. They distribute 14,000 food and beverage products to stores in Michigan and parts of Ohio. The original building in Fraser was 36,000 square feet, and they expanded to add another 80,000 square feet. The total new investment of both personal property and real property was $6.5 million, and they received a 12-year tax abatement on the real property expenses. They had 80 employees before the expansion and hired an additional 20 employees after the expansion.  


Lipari Foods, Inc., Warren

Lipari Foods is a distribution company with 970 total employees, 550 of which are in Michigan. They distribute 15,000 products utilizing 150 salespeople. They have added 2,000 products this year after buying a small distributor in Akron, Ohio. A 70-year-old auto salvage yard is being redeveloped into a state-of-the-art, 252,000-square-foot freezer, warehouse and truck terminal building for Lipari Foods, Inc. The facility will also house food processing and manufacturing. The project costs approximately $36 million and will create 337 new jobs. The incentives created for this project were $1,938,885 Brownfield Tax Increment Financing, Michigan Works! training and services around $257,188, PA 198 Property Tax Abatement real and personal property for 12 years saving almost $6 million, and a loan and grant of $2 million each through the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality.
