Macomb County to accept applications Wednesday for Sheriff
Those seeking appointment as the next Macomb County Sheriff may apply starting Wednesday, December 1, 2010 at 9 a.m. online as the open and transparent process for choosing the next Sheriff continues. The Macomb County Sheriff Appointment Committee will accept applications through Friday, December 10 at 5 p.m. By law, applicants must be registered to vote in Macomb County, which means they must be at least 18 years-old and a U.S. Citizen.
Macomb County Sheriff Mark Hackel was elected in November to be the county’s first County Executive. As required by law, the committee to appoint his successor is made up of Chief Probate Judge Mark Switalski, Macomb County Prosecutor Eric Smith and the Macomb County Clerk / Register of Deeds.
The Sheriff’s Office budget is the largest county funded budget.
Applicants for county employment have used an online system since April. The committee decided to use the same process to appoint a new Sheriff. It is unclear whether any previously appointed Michigan Sheriff has ever applied online.
The committee will meet again on Wednesday, December 15 at 8:30 am in the Macomb County Board of Commissioners conference room, next to the auditorium, on the 9th Floor of the Administration Building, One South Main Street, Mount Clemens to decide which applicants to interview, when those interviews will occur, and the future date at which the new Sheriff will be appointed.
The committee met on November 19 to set the application process and receive reports about the legal requirements for making the appointment, Sheriff Department personnel and the budget.
