Burgess, Rex A.
Rex Burgess graduated from Wayne State University in 1984 and the Detroit College of Law, cum laude, in 1989. He was an associate attorney and then the Managing Partner at the Freeman McKenzie, PC law firm for 12 years principally practicing labor and employment law, municipal law, and litigation before starting his own firm. He prosecuted criminal misdemeanors and ordinance violations on behalf of the City of Mount Clemens as an Assistant City Attorney for many years. He was involved extensively in litigation proceedings on behalf of the firm’s clients in both State and Federal courts and numerous administrative tribunals. He has continued municipal practice on behalf of the City of Richmond, the Mount Clemens Housing Commission, New Haven Community Schools, and Utica Community Schools with the current firm. Rex Burgess completed the ICLE 40 hour mediation training course and is a case evaluator for the Macomb County Circuit Court, sitting on the personal injury panel and the labor and employment panel. He received the distinction of becoming Martindale-Hubbell peer review “AV” rated ten years ago and has consistently maintained that rating, and was named a Michigan “Super Lawyer” in 2010 & 2011. “AV” is the highest rating attorneys can receive from their peers, from the most well respected rating system among attorneys. Rex Burgess was honored by his colleagues when he received the Service Award from the Macomb County Bar Association. Mr. Burgess was the first person to ever be the sole honoree of this award; in the past it had always been presented to several persons or a group. He was honored for his many years of time and energy given to the Macomb County Bar Association Law Day program. He is a member of the State Bar of Michigan, the Macomb County Bar Association, the St. Clair County Bar Association, the National Employment Lawyers Association, the Michigan Association of Justice, and the American Association of Justice. The members of the firm participate in a variety of community activities. Rex Burgess has been a Judge on the High School Moot Court competition for approximately 15 years, has participated in the law related education project from its inception until the death of Mel Miller, and is a Past-President of Comprehensive Youth Services which is headquartered in Mount Clemens. He served honorably in the United States Army in Vietnam.
